Learning outcomes

Satisfy the mandatory minimum requirements for basic training of seafarers in compliance with section A-II / 1 and 3 of the STCW1’95 Code (and subsequent amendments) related to the basic safety training on the of personal survival techniques, the 07/08/2001 Ministerial Decree of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and following notes and the 07/07/2001 Legislative Decree, n.136 Implementation of 2008/106/EC Directive on the minimum level of training for seafarers.

Contents

The course is aimed to  acquire theoretical and practical knowledge on the basic theory and use of a marine radar system; the preparation and use of radar following the manufacturer’s instructions; manual radar plotting; use of radar to ensure safety for navigation; use of radar to avoid collisions or in restricted waters.

COURSE PROGRAM

1 Description of the basic theory and use of a marine radar system

1.1 Principles of radar;

1.2 Safety distances;

1.3 Radiation Risks and precautions;

1.4 Characteristics of the radar equipment and factors affecting performance;

1.5 External factors that affect the performance of the radar apparatus;

1.6 Factors that may cause false interpretations;

1.7 Standards of Performance – Resolution A.477 (XII).

2 Preparation and use of radar following the instructions provided by manufacturer’s

2.1 Preparation and preservation of the radar display;

2.2 Measurement of bearings and distances.

3 Performing Manual radar plotting

3.1 Construction of the relative motion triangle;

3.2 Determination of the course, speed and characteristic of other targets;

3.3 Determination of the CPA and TCPA;

3.4 Recognition of the effect after altering course and speed;

3.5 Report of  radar plotting data.

4 Using the radar data to ensure the safety of navigation

4.1 Fixing ship position by radar;

4.2 Identification of aids to navigation and safety;

4.3 Using the parallel indexing during the navigation.

5 Using the radar to avoid collisions or in restricted waters

5.1 Applications of the COLREGS techniques to avoid collisions or in passage close by ships or shore.

Final Exam

At the end of the course, students must pass a theoretical and practical examination in front of a committee chaired by a representative member of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport

Seafarers having a valid inscription at the Italian SEAFARERS’ Offices and seamen from foreign countries.

Seafarers shall receive basic safety training and education in compliance with the provisions of STCW’95 Code, A-VI / 1 section  (Regulation VI /I of the 07/07/2011Legislative Decree).

The course is obligatory for seafarers that strive for the achievement of the certificate of navigation officer or 3rd class navigation officer, respectively in compliance with articles 1 and 3 of the Ministerial Decree of  October 5th, 2000 modified by Ministerial Decree of December 22nd, 2000.

Before being admitted to the course, it’s necessary  a period on board of at least six months in training activities on tasks and duties of the deck officer on watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more for navigation officer or lower for 3rd class navigation officer.

Target Group for the Course

  • Il personale iscritto nelle Matricole della Gente di Mare;
  • Il personale navigante di nazionalità straniera o italiana in possesso di documento equivalente al libretto di navigazione rilasciato da un Paese Estero;

Il corso è obbligatorio per i marittimi aspiranti al conseguimento del certificato di ufficiale di navigazione o di ufficiale di navigazione di terza classe, ai sensi, rispettivamente, degli articoli 1 e 3 del decreto ministeriale 5 ottobre 2000, modificato dal decreto ministeriale 22 dicembre 2000.

The examination committee is chaired by a representative member of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport,  a member of the teaching staff, and the course Director.
